About a year ago I left Google to join Slack, and I hit the ground running. The team I joined was really excited about the platform we were planning to launch and things were super hectic. We were working with partners to implement bots, deliberating if developers will understand and buy into the concept of bots, and speaking at events to introduce this notion of the conversational office.
“MindMeld lets someone deploy an AI-powered conversational interface from start to finish,” Alexander Rosen, a partner at IDG Ventures told me in an interview. “Not many people outside of Amazon and Google have that.”
Despite the hype, there is a lot of work to be done before we can build conversational software. For now, it’s an ugly marriage of bits of AI which “kind of” work and lots of hand coding. But have you ever seen a robot that just makes you say “aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwww”? Meet Mira — an adorable little mini-bot built by Pixar technical director Alonso Martinez with the help of Aaron Nathan
Working closely with both Machine Intelligence researchers and Gmail engineers, Anjuli Kannan elaborated and experimented with the sequence-to-sequence research ideas. The result is the industrial strength neural network that runs at the core of the Google Smart Reply feature.
Amy isn’t a real person but a software agent that exists somewhere in the cloud & communicates with your contacts and e-mail, helping set up meetings and appointments. The software is being developed by x.ai, which hopes to create something that seems virtually indistinguishable from a real human.
